Welcome to the Climate Game
What you should know about climate change:
Climate fact no. 1:
Such an increase is believed to be the 'safe threshold’: substantially limiting the grave negative impacts of climate change on humans and the environment.
Each half a degree is a lot – if the temperature on Earth dropped by 4 degrees, we would be back in the Ice Age!
The temperature does not rise evenly on the whole planet – there are places and regions which might be more or less severely impacted. The land gets hot roughly twice faster than the ocean, but the temperature of the Arctic Ocean increases four times faster!
Deviations from the mean temperature since pre-industrial levels are shown below:
Climate fact no. 2:
The increased amount of carbon in the atmosphere enforces the greenhouse effect which traps the heat of the earth on its surface, increasing the temperature.
As shown on the graph, the increase is fast and in comparison with past thousands of years – happens with a never observed speed.
Climate fact no. 3:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) comprising of thousands of scientists each year publishes joint reports on the state of the Earth. , including climate change. This year, they announced ’code red for humanity’, firmly stating that human influence on global warming is 'unequivocal’.
of scientists support the consensus on anthropogenic climate change
Climate fact no. 4:
The natural disasters and other phenomena will be followed by economic and social crises – lower crops and therefore lack of food; water shortages caused by long hot periods; deadly heatwaves; losses of peoples homes due to rising sea levels, fires, floods.
Due to inhabitable conditions, millions of people from vulnerable regions will be forced to leave their homes and migrate.
Each 0.5 degree difference in climate scenarios increases the probability, frequency of occurrence and severity of such terrible events. Moreover, some of the impacts will be unpredictable, as the Earth’s ecosystem is very complex. The rising temperature might itself trigger some processes which will keep accelerating the emissions of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, perpetuating the temperature increase.
Many of these changes are irreversible for hundreds of thousand years.
Climate fact no. 5:
Each decision made to stop burning fossil fuels and shift to low-carbon energy sources such as renewable (solar, wind, hydro), nuclear or hydrogen leads to decrease in emissions, and therefore reduces the severity of the climate crisis.
The problem will not disappear – we cannot give up!
If we keep burning, the temperature keeps rising.
